911 Dispatch is designed to develop entry-level skills needed in an emergency telecommunication environment for public safety. The course provides the beginning telecommunicator with an understanding of situations encountered in an emergency communications environment. Upon completion, the student will be able to: summarize issues involving the telecommunicator's role and responsibilities as a member of health and public safety environment; summarize issues involving available resources to a telecommunicator; the importance of maintaining confidentiality, liability and legal issues involving emergency telecommunicators and their agencies; summarize the process of stress management for inside and outside a communications department/center. Medical Code & Bill 2 students will become familiar with the health insurance industry and legal and regulatory issues. Students will learn the principles of medical coding and billing related to reimbursement, claim submission, and payment regarding ICD, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems. Students will consider the impact of fraud and the importance of biomedical ethics. This course is part of the Claude Moore Scholars, a healthcare education program and grant supporting the HMS program. The game design industry is the fastest revenue growing entertainment medium and has created many new job disciplines. In this project-based course, students will create innovative games through the application of graphic design, animation, audio, and writing skills. Students will work in teams while developing problem-solving, critical thinking, and effective communication skills. They will analyze, design, prototype, and critique interactive games within a project management environment. Career opportunities across multiple industries, including the entertainment and educational arenas, will be explored. Integrated Engineering 1 is part of an innovative, three-year STEM curriculum that integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics to solve real world problems. By applying engineering concepts to design problems students will dramatically improve their use of mathematics, computer simulations, scientific analysis, oral and technical writing skills during this course. Students will work with partners from the community and business to provide solutions to authentic problems and to gain valuable college and career readiness skills. Students interested in this cohort will also need to commit to the three-year integrated STEM sequence. Integrated Engineering 2 HN is part of an innovative, three-year STEM curriculum that integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics to solve real world problems. Integrated Engineering 2 will continue building on content knowledge by applying engineering concepts to design problems for the improvement of student�s mathematics, computer simulations, scientific analysis, oral and technical writing skills. Students will work with partners from the community and business to provide solutions to authentic problems and to gain valuable college and career readiness skills. Students interested in this cohort will also need to commit to the three-year integrated STEM sequence. Heating & AC 2 DE provides the opportunity for students to earn credit for AIR 111 through Northern Virginia Community College. Students continue their education of the HVAC program in the second year which focuses on the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting service and repair of a central air conditioning system as well as a gas furnace, oil furnace and heat pump systems. Students will also learn about weatherization and energy efficiency of HVAC equipment and ductwork as well as understanding various types of motors used in HVAC equipment. During the second year focus is also given to the Environmental Protection Agency's Section 608 refrigerant handling certification with the goal of passing the Core section plus one or more types in either small appliances, high or low pressure systems earning them an industry credential. Automotive Technology 1 DE provides the opportunity for students to earn credit for AUT 100 through Northern Virginia Community College. Students will study and define the eight major systems of the automobile, related tools and equipment, and the automotive industry. An emphasis will be placed on diagnosing systems, developing troubleshooting skills, and the safe use of laboratory equipment. Curriculum is developed from Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) task lists. Major topics include engine performance, brakes, electrical and electronic systems, and suspension and steering systems. In addition, students will be tested on ASE criteria. As an option, students may have an opportunity to participate in local internship experiences. Skills USA, the co-curricular student organization, offers opportunities in leadership, community, and competitive events.

Cosmetology 2 students build on their theoretical foundation of general sciences and practices in cosmetology to increase proficiency in hair cutting and styling on live models, with attention to professionalism, client consultation, safety, and infection control. Students are trained in safe chemical processes related to permanent waves, relaxers, lightening, and coloring hair. In addition, students learn to care for skin, hands, and feet, developing experience in providing facials, manicures, pedicures, and nail enhancements. Students will be introduced to a business management unit with a focus on managing the salon. Students complete the required cosmetology competencies determined by the Virginia Board of Cosmetology in preparation for the Virginia Cosmetology State Board Exam to qualify as a licensed cosmetologist. Students in this course will have the opportunity to take the Virginia Cosmetology State Board Exam provided they have a social security number or a control number issued by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles as required by the Virginia Board of Cosmetology.

Level 1 is designed to provide students with basic skills and knowledge to begin work as a pharmacy technician. The coursework will fulfill the requirements of the Virginia Board of Pharmacy and prepare students for level 2. Trained, experienced pharmacy technicians who can demonstrate the right skills and knowledge, have many exciting and respected career options, and are well-positioned to pursue postsecondary study in the pharmacy field. Students must meet current health agency requirements to participate in clinical experiences. Some healthcare facilities that accept federal funding (e.g., Medicare, Medicaid) may require criminal background checks and drug screens for students participating in a clinical experience. An updated immunization record will be required prior to the student participating in the clinical experience. This course is part of the Claude Moore Scholars, a healthcare education program and grant supporting the HMS program. This course will be nationally accredited by the ASHP and will include the minimum number of hours as follows: Didactic � 120 hours; Simulated � 50 hours; Experiential � 130 hours (total of 300 hours); plus 100 additional hours, to obtain the minimum of 400 hours of training total. The additional 100 hours may be allocated to the three educational modalities listed above, based on the discretion of the program director and faculty.

Education for Employment 2 teaches students to make informed career and continuing education choices as they transition from school, gain technical skills, and adapt to the workplace. Students are taught ethical behaviors and career-research, job-acquisition, workplace-communication, self- awareness, self-advocacy, customer-service, and life skills. Students successfully completing two years of this course will satisfy sequential elective requirements prescribed in certain diplomas.

Automotive Collision Svc 3 students participating in Automotive Collision 3 will strive towards independence and quality workmanship as they become more proficient in their individual skill set to repair and/or refinish minor late-model damaged vehicles. The curriculum and laboratory practices defined by I-CAR and Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) include the following: refinishing, metalworking, welding, frame-strengthening systems, unibody measuring principles, structural repair, steering, suspension, mechanical, and electrical repairs. Academy Dance 2 is a course where students will develop proficiency in dance through movement, alignment, technique, flexibility and strength. Students will broaden and accrue knowledge in dance history, vocabulary, criticism, anatomy, kinesiology, theory, and composition. Students will explore concepts and employ skills in choreography, improvisation and performance. Participation in academy-based performances may be required to receive credit for this course.

IB Chinese SL 2 is the second segment of a two-year series that prepares students to take the IB Chinese Exam. The development of all language skills - listening, speaking, reading, writing - continues, with emphasis on using the language in realistic contexts with authentic materials, to include films, recordings, newspapers and magazines. Selected literary works are included. Examples and questions from past IB exams are used as learning tools at appropriate times throughout the course.

Algebra 1 Part 1 builds on students' understanding of the real number system and its properties through the study of variables, expressions, equations, inequalities, and analysis of data derived from real-world phenomena. Topics include algebraic expressions, linear equations and inequalities, linear relations and functions, and review of middle school mathematics objectives as needed. Graphing utilities and other relevant technology tools will be used extensively to support instruction, especially to allow students to explore graphical, numerical, and symbolic relationships conceptually. This course may be used in conjunction with Algebra 1 (313000) for Double Block instruction. This course does not count towards a mathematics graduation credit.

Music Sampler students are provided the opportunity to sample a variety of musical experiences in a non-performing music class. Course content is designed to meet the interests of the students as well as exploring music reading, performance, and/or composing skills. Selected composers and musical compositions will be studied as a part of this course.

Literacy Essentials is designed to provide direct, explicit and intensive literacy instruction to students with disabilities who are reading and./or writing significantly below grade level. Basic objectives of this literacy course is focused on closing the gap between the student's present level of performance and the level of performance needed to successfully access the general curriculum. Instruction focuses on increasing student's decoding, fluency and comprehension skills of fiction and nonfiction materials, and improving writing skills across the curriculum which is based on the diagnosis of each student's needs as outlined through the student's Individual Education Program (IEP). Students successfully completing two years of this course will satisfy the sequential elective requirement for the Standard Diploma and the Standard Diploma with credit accommodations.

Algebra Functions Data Analysis provides an opportunity for students to develop understanding of the role of mathematics in the world around them. It is designed for students who have completed Algebra 1 and Geometry and may benefit from additional support in their transition to Algebra 2 and higher level mathematics courses. Within the context of mathematical modeling and data analysis, students will study functions and their behaviors, systems of inequalities, probability, experimental design and implementation, and analysis of data. Data will be generated through practical applications arising from science, business, and finance. Students will solve problems that require the formulation of linear, quadratic, exponential, or piecewise-defined equations or a system of equations. Through the investigation of mathematical models and interpretation/analysis of data from relevant, applied contexts and situations, students will strengthen conceptual understandings in mathematics and further develop connections between algebra and statistics. Students should use the language and symbols of mathematics in representations and communication, both orally and in writing, throughout the course.

Students develop software solutions by building web apps. Technologies may include a back-end SQL database, web programming in PHP and/or JavaScript, and user-interface design for mobile displays: HTML elements, CSS, tables, the DOM, and cookies. Web server configuration, server-side cookies, Iframes, and sessions may also be covered, as well as page sequencing, including both theory and practice in web services. Development consists of the formal methods of software engineering such as product life-cycle and collaborative organizational structures. Students work in teams and typical activities include both design reviews and code reviews. Emphasis will vary based on projects and industry trends, and accessibility, privacy, security, connectivity, and product audience.

Korean 3 students continue to develop and refine their proficiency in all four language skills - listening, speaking, reading, and writing - with emphasis on the ability to interact orally and in writing. They communicate using more complex language structures on a variety of topics moving from concrete to more abstract concepts. At this level students comprehend the main ideas of the authentic materials that they read and hear and are able to identify significant details when the topics are familiar. Students gain a deeper understanding of the world around them while studying the POS themes of My Memories, Teen Life, My Future, Conservation & Ecology, and Literature and Media.
